Legal Measure to Keep Suspects Under House Arrest Without Remanding

The government has taken steps to introduce legal provisions to keep the suspects arrested by the police under house arrest as an alternative to remand, after they are presented to the court.

Overcrowding in Sri Lanka’s prisons has been identified as a long-standing problem and as a remedy the government has decided to introduce legislation to house arrest suspects and offenders in appropriate cases as an alternative to remand/imprisonment.

A committee headed by a Supreme Court judge has been appointed to make appropriate recommendations.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms to advise a draftsman to prepare a bill to introduce appropriate laws based on the report submitted by the said officer committee.
