In an alarming incident, a sergeant from the Minister’s Security Division, responsible for the safety of Member of Parliament Mohammad Musammil, fell victim to a theft while intoxicated and asleep in Pettah. The officer had been assigned to accompany the MP to his residence in Matale but, due to space constraints in the vehicle, was instructed to travel by bus to Matale.
Having completed his duties on the 7th, the sergeant, in his ministerial security uniform, carried a duty pistol, and some clothes in a bag as he arrived in Pettah to catch a bus to Matale. During the night, he encountered a friend from the police and accompanied him to the canteen of junior police officers.
Later, while the sergeant was returning he rested leaning against an iron fence on Olcott Mawatha because he couldn’t walk straight further. He fell asleep with his head on the fence and the suitcase between his legs. Upon waking up, he discovered that the suitcase, containing his uniform and duty firearm, was missing. He made a complaint to the Pettah Police in this regard. The Pettah police have launched an investigation into the incident.
