A Sri Lankan Arrested in India for Defrauding Money by an Online Part-Time Job Scam

A Sri Lankan man who allegedly defrauded an IT professional in India of Rs 60 lakh by claiming that he was offering part-time jobs online has been arrested by the Cuddalore Police’s cyber crime wing.

According to local news reports, the 32-year-old S.Sampath of Kurunjipadi, India, received a message through the Telegram app offering him a part-time job online.

He was tricked by the unknown person into giving him money for completing certain tasks online and assured that he would make a small investment to review the app and Sampath would get good returns.

Sampath has connected the unknown person to a large Telegram group where he continues to complete the tasks given to him on promises of profit.

There he continued to perform the tasks and paid an amount of INR 60 lakhs into a bank account.

After finally realizing his cheating, he filed a complaint with the cyber crime police.

Accordingly, on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, R Rajaram, a comprehensive investigation was conducted by the Cyber Crime Unit of India.

The last transaction of 6 lakh rupees made to an account holder of that group was found and the details of the suspected bank account holder and the associated mobile phone number were obtained from the bank.

The police found that the account belonged to 26-year-old Salman Mohammad Farooq, a Sri Lankan resident of Ambattur, Chennai.

The police have revealed that the mastermind of the online scam is in China.

Police arrested Salman in Chennai last Tuesday and brought him to Cuddalore.

The Sri Lankan was remanded after being produced in the court and is being held in the Cuddalore Central Jail.

Indian police are conducting further investigations into this online part-time job scam.
