It has been proposed to reduce the number of school grades from 13 to 12, says Mr. Susil Premajayantha, the Minister of Education.
Unveiling the new education reforms, the minister said that according to the proposal, every child will be given the opportunity to complete school education at the age of 17.
Also, pre-school education is classified at the age of 04 years, and the primary section is from grade 01 to grade 05.
The Ministry of Education stated that the junior section has been classified into grades 06-08 and the senior section has been classified into grades 09-12.
It has been proposed to give some percentage of marks from school-based evaluations and some percentage from exams for the scholarship exam.
Also, it is shown in the proposed new education reform to conduct the O/L examination in the 10th grade and the A/L examination in the 12th grade.
It has also been decided to reduce the number of subjects currently available for O/L education from 09 to 07.
Among those 07 subjects, it will be compulsory to study the three new subjects of Information and Communication Technology, Technical and Professional Skills and Religion.
The Ministry of Education says that about 80,000 people fail in the O/L examination in a year, but through the new reforms, no child will fail and it has been proposed to provide the opportunity for all children to study vocational training courses.
The ministry has issued a statement saying that A/L subjects have been classified into two categories as academic studies and professional studies and a path has been prepared for every child to obtain a degree.
