In response to the risk of landslides, evacuations are currently in progress in various areas of the Kandy district. The Kandy District Disaster Management Assistant Director, Mr. Indika Ranaweera, has reported that residents of designated dangerous locations, including Peradeniya city, are being evacuated.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has identified several areas, and it has been reported that businesses at the foot of the Peradeniya mountain pass are also at risk. This assessment follows a tragic incident in Peradeniya town on the Kandy-Colombo road where part of the mountain pass collapsed, destroying two businesses and resulting in the death of a 68-year-old unmarried man named Anura Jayaweera.
Multiple agencies, including Peradeniya Police, the Army, Kandy District Disaster Management Division, and the Municipal Fire Service Department, are working collaboratively to manage the situation and conduct evacuations. The focus is on ensuring the safety of residents in vulnerable areas.
Mr. Indika Ranaweera highlighted the proactive role of the NBRO in providing information about risky locations to relevant authorities and residents. As a precautionary measure, steps will be taken today to evacuate 15 families from Medadumbara Rangala, indicating the comprehensive efforts to address potential landslide risks in the region.
