Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board Chairman Professor SRD Rosa says that plans are being prepared to build a floating nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka by the year 2032.
According to the current law of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board and the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority, Sri Lanka is not able to obtain electricity supply from a nuclear power plant.
Accordingly, the first thing to be done is to prepare drafts to change the relevant law.
For that purpose, the chairman said that the country’s nuclear energy law should be prepared and he said that he is currently discussing with the officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Four representatives, including Mr. Anthony Weatherall, Head of the Nuclear and Contract Law Division of the Legal Affairs Office of the International Atomic Energy Agency, recently visited the island to assist in that.
Continuous electricity supply is required for new projects in the country including Colombo Port City, Light Rail.
Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board Chairman Prof. SRD Rosa said that the most appropriate source is nuclear power supply.
He said that Sri Lanka is focusing on a 400 MW floating nuclear power plant.
