Police investigations into the devastating fire at the Maulana Building on Second Cross Street, Pettah, have determined the origin of the blaze. The fire, which engulfed the six-story building housing numerous shops, originated from the Tanisha Textile store situated on the ground floor.
According to authorities, the fire ignited when petrol was being used in an attempt to light lamps and burn coconut shells for fumigation purposes within the market area. Tragically, the fire broke out when petrol splashed onto the ground, hitting the foot of an employee and causing an accidental ignition.
A total of 21 individuals, including seven women employed at the textile store, were hospitalized due to complications arising from smoke inhalation during the fire. Presently, all victims except one continue to receive medical treatment, with six individuals under critical care in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.
Minister of Health and Industry, Mr. Ramesh Pathirana, expressed his concern and visited the Colombo National Hospital to inquire about the well-being of the fire victims, offering support and reassurance to those affected by the tragic incident.
