Former Welimada Local Council Chairman Flees Arrest Following Altercation with Police Officers

The Welimada police have issued a warrant for the arrest of the former chairman of the Welimada local council, who allegedly engaged in a heated altercation with two police officers handling traffic duties in Kappetipola city. Police Sergeant Gunaratne (39372) and Police Constable Ainkaran (102770), both from the Welimada Police Station, were on duty when they noticed a car parked near a state bank in a manner that obstructed the pedestrian crossing. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the car’s driver was absent, and the vehicle was blocking the road.

In response to this violation, the officers displayed a police notice on the front left side of the car to inform law enforcement actions. However, the situation escalated when the former Welimada local council chairman approached the officers and berated them in harsh language. He claimed that the vehicle, which obstructed the pedestrian crossing, belonged to the bank manager and insisted that the police were wrong.

Witnesses reported that the former chairman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol during the incident. Subsequently, the Welimada police have launched a manhunt for the ex-chairman, who fled to Colombo following the altercation. He now faces charges of harassment and criminal coercion, adding to the legal complications arising from his behavior towards law enforcement officers.
