The serene atmosphere of the Buddhist temple in Washington DC was filled with devotion as approximately 300 Buddhist devotees, including Sri Lankans, gathered for the annual ‘Katina Pinkama.’ The event was graced by Chief Sanghanayaka Panjaloka Nahimi Viharaya Chief from Canada, North America’s Chief Sanghanayake, Director of Gaithersburg Panynaseeha Meditation Center, Maharagama Dhammasiri Nahimi, Weyihene (Galle) Panyaloka Nahimi, and Wathuliyadde Rathanaseeha Thero, who conducted the prayers and disciplines.
A significant part of the celebration was a special procession featuring illuminating sermons, Buddha Puja, and traditional Buddhist cultural items. The sacred relic was respectfully carried through the streets by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe, adding a touch of reverence to the event. Following the alms giving in the afternoon, a sumptuous lunch was served to all attendees, fostering a sense of community and harmony.
This year’s pilgrimage received generous support from various quarters. The Ambassador of Washington and his staff, along with Buddhist devotees from the Metropolitan area and a group of Buddhists from Vietnam, contributed significantly to the success of the event, exemplifying the spirit of unity and cooperation among diverse communities.
