Mahaweli Reservoirs Reap Benefits of Heavy Rains

Following a period of heavy rains, the water levels in Sri Lanka’s Mahaweli reservoirs have experienced a significant increase, reaching 46%. Mr. Nilantha Dhanapala, Director of the Water Control Secretariat at the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, revealed that the Kothmale reservoir’s capacity has risen to 77%, and the Victoria reservoir stands at 44%.

With these encouraging water levels, the Mahaweli Authority has initiated the release of water essential for Maha season cultivation. The initiative, which began recently, is slated for completion on the first of the upcoming month. Farmers are urged to commence their cultivation activities as per the established schedule, ensuring timely and efficient use of the available water resources. The rise in reservoir capacities brings hope to the agricultural sector, promising a fruitful harvest season ahead.
