Government’s Latest Effort to Take Students Beyond the Classroom Through ‘STEAM’

Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha announced the implementation of the STEAM education system, emphasizing the importance of taking students beyond traditional classrooms and tuition classes. The STEAM system, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, aims to provide students with refreshing education through practical activities and real-world experiences.

Dr. Premajayantha highlighted the success of developed countries that have adopted similar systems, citing their rapid economic progress and high gross national income percentages. He emphasized the need for Sri Lanka to embrace this approach to bridge the gap in education and the economy that has persisted for decades due to delays in adopting new trends.

International surveys have confirmed the positive impact of practical education, allowing students to explore fresh experiences in diverse settings beyond the classroom. The Minister expressed pride in Sri Lankan innovators who have made significant contributions globally, emphasizing the potential of the country to excel in practical education.

Supported by renowned Sri Lankan scholars, the groundwork has been laid to initiate a sustainable program, effectively integrating the STEAM education concept into the national school system. This move marks a significant step toward fostering innovation, creativity, and holistic learning among Sri Lankan students.
