A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the Southern Indian Ocean – No Tsunami Threat

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the southern Indian Ocean off the coast of Colombo tonight.

Experts from the Maldives and Sri Lanka Meteorological Department say that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka or the Maldives.

However, the senior consultant geologist at the Norwegian Institute of Geotechnology, Dr. Steven J. Gibbons says the quake was “extremely unusual.” He points out that the place where this earthquake is marked is an unusual place to be an earthquake.
