The Sri Lankan government has undertaken measures to distribute 21,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer necessary for the upcoming Maha season starting today (09). Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has issued directives to government-owned fertilizer companies, namely Lanka Fertilizer Company and Colombo Commercial Fertilizer Company, to oversee the distribution process.
Farmers can purchase the fertilizer from agricultural service centers, with a 50 kg bundle of urea fertilizer being sold at a price of 9,000 rupees. Additionally, the government has allocated a subsidy of 15,000 rupees per hectare to support farmers in procuring chemical or organic fertilizers.
The Agriculture Minister has emphasized the importance of prioritizing the supply of fertilizers, including urea, for paddy cultivation as well as other crops such as vegetables. These efforts aim to support farmers in preparing for a successful Maha season.
