Urgent Warning Issued as Matara ‘Galbamma’ Faces Overflow (📸)

The Disaster Management Center has issued a stern warning, advising people to avoid visiting the Atthudawa area, where the stone embankment was built to prevent floods in Matara. The embankment is currently at risk of overflowing due to the rising water levels in the Nilwala River lowlands.

Overflow from the flood protection rock wall in Aththudawa has led to an increase in water levels, posing a significant danger to the lowlands near the river. The water level had risen to 90 cm, exceeding the spillage level of 79 cm. The embankment, which is 90 meters long, is experiencing an 11 cm overflow.

Despite the imminent danger, locals have been gathering to witness the situation. The Disaster Management Department, along with the police, is working to remove people from the area and has warned residents of the Matara district to evacuate the low-lying areas around the stone embankment (Galbamma).

Given the critical circumstances, residents are strongly advised to prioritize their safety and adhere to the guidance provided by local authorities.
