An incident occurred during a meeting of the National Security Sectoral Monitoring Committee, resulting in Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, the Chairman of the Committee, proposing the removal of Member of Parliament Mr. Chandima Weerakkody from the committee.
According to Rear Admiral Weerasekera, MP Weerakkody allegedly behaved inappropriately and insultingly towards the armed forces commanders, including the Defense Secretary, during the committee meeting. The meeting was convened to discuss the Defense Ministry’s annual reports and progress.
Rear Admiral Weerasekera expressed regret over MP Weerakkody’s behavior, stating that he spoke disrespectfully to the military commanders, bringing up an unrelated issue. MP Weerakkody’s actions were deemed to violate the privileges of all members of parliament.
As a result, Rear Admiral Weerasekera has proposed to the Speaker of the Parliament to remove MP Chandima Weerakkody from the National Security Sectoral Monitoring Committee. Further actions and decisions regarding this incident are awaited.
