Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe has openly disagreed with certain proposals put forth by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), asserting that these suggestions would significantly burden the public. Speaking in an interview with Germany’s DW news agency, President Wickramasinghe emphasized his stance against these proposals, expressing concern about their potential impact on the country’s citizens.
President Wickramasinghe revealed that he urged the government to present alternative proposals to the IMF, ones that wouldn’t impose undue hardship on the public. Despite this disagreement, the President clarified that the IMF hasn’t officially stated the cessation of the second tranche of financial support to Sri Lanka. In light of several outstanding proposals, he acknowledged his willingness to engage in discussions with the IMF staff and provide a detailed explanation of Sri Lanka’s position. The President’s comments underscore the nation’s ongoing efforts to navigate economic challenges while safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
