Chief Inspectors of Police file complaint alleging corruption in 2021 Police promotions interview

A group of Chief Police Inspectors has filed a formal complaint with the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission, urging an inquiry into alleged corruption during the 2021 interview process for promotions to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

The complaint centers on the interview panel convened in 2021 to fill 230 vacant Assistant Superintendent of Police positions and the officers who participated in the interview panel and subsequently secured promotions to Assistant Superintendents of Police.

A total of 495 Chief Inspectors of Police were called for this interview, which was overseen by retired Major General Jagath Alwis, the former secretary of the Ministry of Public Security at that time.

The complaint submitted to the Bribery Commission alleges that the interview board exhibited favoritism by granting special promotions to a specific group of officers and deviating from the established scoring methodology.

Furthermore, the officers behind the complaint assert that some candidates even submitted fraudulent documents during the interview process. They claim that despite notifying the responsible authorities about these irregularities, no appropriate actions were taken.

In light of these concerns, the officials who filed the complaint have called upon the Bribery Allegations Investigation Commission to launch a formal investigation into these allegations.
