The Central Provincial Ministry of Education has disclosed that only 3% of children in the grade 4-5 classes of Central Provincial schools demonstrate a satisfactory level of literacy.
Menaka Herath, Secretary of the Central Provincial Education Ministry, cited the primary reason for this concerning statistic as the challenges in delivering essential primary education, including hands-on letter instruction, to students who began their education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To address this issue, the Ministry has initiated programs aimed at assessing the literacy levels of children aged 6 to 11 and enhancing literacy not just in the primary sector but across a broader age group.
Secretary Herath further noted that programs to boost children’s literacy levels in the Central Province are being executed with support from the World Bank. Additionally, he emphasized that the Central Provincial education system has been ranked 7th overall and that short, medium, and long-term initiatives will be launched to enhance educational quality.
Furthermore, Mr. Menaka Herath acknowledged that teacher vacancies pose a significant challenge and stated that filling the five thousand teacher vacancies in the Central Province is a complex task. Consequently, a program has been launched to recruit volunteer teachers to address this issue.
