The government has issued a gazette notice announcing the bill on online safety.
According to the Gazette, the bill would allow for establishing the Online Safety Commission and banning certain statements of fact from being communicated online in Sri Lanka.
Earlier this bill was approved by the Cabinet on September 4.
According to the Gazette, the Act enables the establishment of the Commission on Safety of Online Methods and the ability to prohibit the online communication of certain statements about an incident in Sri Lanka.
Also, this allows to prevent the use of Online Accounts and Fake Online Accounts for prohibited purposes and to make arrangements for identifying and declaring online sites used for prohibited purposes in Sri Lanka.
At the same time, this bill has been prepared to prevent the provision of money and other assistance to communicate false statements about a particular incident and to allow for related matters.
