We should demand compensation from global North for the scholars who have left the country

President Ranil Wickramasinghe says that as the global South, due to the migration of our educated workforce to the North, there has been another threat to the development of science, technology and innovation sectors in the South.

He emphasizes that compensation should be demanded from the Global North for that.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe mentioned this while addressing the “G77 and China” Head of State Summit which started yesterday (15) in Havana, Cuba.

“The loss of educated workforce as a result of the brain drain from the Global South to the North has become another threat to the development of science, technology and innovation sectors in the South.

Countries like China, India, Japan and South Korea have developed science, technology and innovation by nurturing their workforce. Therefore, the Global South should demand compensation from the Global North for the loss of our educated workforce.

Countries of the Global South must commit to maintaining closer cooperation. I also propose a scheme similar to the Colombo Plan to enhance cooperation, share best practices and develop policies that harness the transformative potential of science, technology and innovation.

It should also be emphasized that Sri Lanka is committed to supporting the New Havana Declaration. I also request all member countries to join in taking the collective voice of the “G77 and China” Summit to the international community.
