Morocco earthquake death toll nears 3,000 – 2,000 are injured

The death toll from the strongest earthquake in a century and the deadliest in more than 60 years in Morocco has now exceeded 2,862.

So far, the number of injured persons is 2562.

Search teams from Spain, Britain and Qatar are joining efforts to rescue victims of the Moroccan earthquake.

Despite the scale of damage after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake, search teams with dog officers are still hoping to find survivors.

‘I’m sure there will be some rescues in the next few days, there may still be people in the collapsed buildings. We never give up hope,’ said a Spanish rescue team official.

This is the first time since 1960 that such a deadly earthquake has occurred in the North African country of Morocco. It is estimated that at least 12,000 people died in the earthquake.

According to the US Geological Survey, this is the strongest earthquake to hit the country since 1900.
