The government is preparing to change the excise laws.
State Minister for Finance Mr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says that steps will be taken to amend the current Excise Act for that purpose.
The State Minister points out that the Excise Ordinance currently in force in Sri Lanka is an Act that is more than 100 years old.
It is periodically updated with more than 1,000 Excise Notifications as per the needs of the times.
“So it’s like a patient with a lot of band-aids on this. The areas covered by the act are not enough today. Endless holes have been created. Here we hope to close all these loopholes and make the necessary updates to get the real government revenue. Therefore, we are taking the necessary steps to amend the Excise Act,” the state minister emphasized.
