At least 296 people have been killed and 153 injured in the strongest earthquake to hit Morocco, according to the country’s internal affairs ministry.
According to the US Geological Survey, this is the strongest earthquake to hit the North African country of Morocco in more than a century.
The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 6.8.
Buildings in Marrakech, Morocco were severely damaged by the earthquake.
The earthquake struck just after 11pm local time (22:00 GMT).
The epicenter was about 72 kilometers (44 miles) northeast of Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles), the US Geological Survey said.
The earthquake affected six provinces in the Atlas Mountains of central Morocco, close to the city of Marrakesh.
8 to 10 million people live in the area affected by the earthquake.
They mostly live in rural areas and earn money from eco-tourism.
Officials have said that the number of lives or property damage caused by the earthquake is yet to be calculated, so these numbers may rise further.
