Mining of gems in dried-up reservoirs will be allowed

As the reservoirs have dried up due to the dry weather, the government has focused on mining the related gem deposits.

Mr. Gamini Waleboda, the Chairman of the Sectoral Monitoring Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis, said that the relevant institutions have been advised to prepare a program for mining gem deposits without harming the environment.

Accordingly, it has been instructed to call the Mahaweli Authority, Electricity Board, Irrigation Department, Gems and Jewelery Authority, District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, Gems and Jewelery Research Institute and Ministry of Power and give a report.

Mr. Gamini Waleboda mentioned that after receiving the related report, the relevant resolution will be passed in the parliament and the authority will be transferred to the relevant institutions.
