According to the Central Environmental Authority, the chemical parts have been added to the outside air from the fire that broke out on the night of the 17th in a warehouse of a factory in the Katuwana area of Homagama that supplies chemicals.
Eight fire engines arrived and brought the fire under control by yesterday morning, and the Sri Lankan Army and Air Force have also assisted in extinguishing the fire.
With fire extinguishing, there is some control over the addition of chemical particles to the surrounding air. But with the water used to extinguish the fire, those chemical parts have been added to the surrounding environment and the waste water mixed with chemicals has spread to the other factories around the factory.
The authority has advised to immediately remove the watery mud where the chemical parts have remained as soon as possible.
The Central Environmental Authority says that its approval has not been obtained by the relevant factory for this chemical warehouse.
The Central Environment Authority also said that legal action will be taken in this regard.
Homagama Health Medical Officer’s Office said that due to the fire in the chemical warehouse, people in the vicinity are advised to wear face masks.
The office also said that the chemicals chlorine and sodium silicate were stored here.
The police media spokesperson said that the cause of the fire has not yet been revealed and the government inspector will investigate it in the coming days.
No casualties were reported in the fire and minor damage was done to two nearby factories.
