The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has approved the Sri Lanka Electricity Board today (17) to purchase 100 megawatts of electricity for a period of 6 months.
Approval has been given to purchase electricity for a period of 6 months from 18th August 2023 under 3 main conditions.
The relevant electricity purchase should be done on merit basis and an independent audit should be done on the purchase at the end of the electricity purchase agreement period.
Also, the Kothmale Polpitiya 220 kilowatt line should be activated before August 31, 2024. This electricity should be purchased on the basis of minimum cost.
Due to the current dry weather, there have been difficulties in generating hydropower and due to this, the Minister of Power had stated that in order to support a continuous power supply without power cuts, the Ministry had to buy electricity.
