A special discussion between a group of members of the Tamil National Alliance and the Minister of Public Security Mr. Tiran Alas regarding the division of police powers in the 13th Amendment was held yesterday (9) afternoon at the Ministry of Public Security.
In this discussion, the Minister of Public Security, Mr. Tiran Alas, asked the reasons for requesting police powers.
There, the members of the Tamil Alliance have explained the need for power sharing by taking the example of other countries in the world.
The problems faced by the Tamils were also discussed here.
The minister discussed the possibility of solving those problems without dividing police powers.
The Tamil Alliance MPs pointed out that even in developed countries such as England and India, the distribution of power was done in an excellent manner and explained that the methods used there can be implemented in Sri Lanka.
Minister Tiran Alas pointed out that the political and social cultures of England and Sri Lanka are completely different.
The Minister of Public Security questioned the need of the Tamil people and Tamil political leaders to implement the Thirteenth Amendment.
The members of the Tamil National Alliance said that the need to implement the 13th amendment is because they have to pay long distances to come to Colombo to implement the decisions taken by the district committees and there is a problem with the implementation of the decisions of some governors.
Also, they pointed out that nothing new is added to the proposed matters regarding the granting of police powers, but there is a need to appoint the Provincial Police Commission in addition to the National Police Commission.
The Tamil National Alliance MPs said that the trend of drugs and crime has increased throughout the northern region and many young children are heavily addicted to drugs.
The Minister of Public Security assured that the information available on such matters will be provided to the special police committee appointed for drug and underworld organizations at any time and that the confidentiality of such information will be protected.
Both sides agreed to hold the next discussion in a fortnight as requested by the members of the Tamil National Alliance.
England and India no example for us. We can criss cross the entire country within 12 hours. When the nation is financial broke and can’t afford a local government election why invite a White Elephant 🐘.
