3 million liters of water evaporate daily from the Victoria Reservoir due to extreme heat

Due to the rainless dry weather, three million liters of water evaporates daily from the Victoria Reservoir, according to its Chief Engineer Mr. Wasantha Ehelapitiya.

The engineer said that Victoria, which is the largest hydropower generating reservoir in the Central Highlands, will have an area of 24 square kilometers when fully drained, and due to lack of water, 13 square kilometers are currently without water.

He said that the amount of water that is 05 mm high on the surface of 11 square kilometers which is currently filled in the reservoir evaporates daily.

He also said that when the reservoir is full, two millimeters of the water volume usually evaporates, but due to the prevailing dry weather conditions, the amount of evaporation has increased more than twice.

As a solution to this problem, the installation of floating solar panels on reservoirs has been proposed and such projects are currently being implemented in countries such as Germany, Korea and China, Mr. Wasantha Ehelapitiya added.
