State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe says that the Treasury can no longer provide money for the running of state businesses.
“If we are to move forward as a country, we can no longer provide money from the Treasury to run state businesses. The second thing is that government businesses must change to be able to withstand the challenging economic conditions that will arise in the future. Accordingly, we are planning to restructure several types of government business. Parliament will be informed about all those restructurings.”
A special team of the Ministry of Finance will look into the matter for the restructuring of state businesses, the state minister said while attending a press conference held today (22).
“We have publicized the fact that public enterprises are being restructured. Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the restructuring. A separate unit has been set up under the Ministry of Finance and the officers of that unit are currently studying and discussing with other government agencies about the most suitable method of restructuring.”
