The Indo-Lanka Economic Partnership Vision has been announced.
This was announced in a joint press conference when the visiting President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in New Delhi today.
It has focused on developing relations between the two countries through 05 areas, namely maritime, aviation, energy and electricity, trade-economic and financial affairs, and personal relations.
Speaking to the media in India, the President said that the progress Sri Lanka has made so far has restored the confidence of the country as well as the external parties.
In the face of the economic challenge, Prime Minister Modi thanked the Indian government and the people for the support provided by India to Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi further said, “It is a pleasure to welcome Mr. Wickremesinghe. I wish him all the best for completing one year of assuming the office of President and working for the progress of Sri Lanka with great courage. Sri Lanka is very important in our ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘SAGAR’ efforts, and we discussed ways to strengthen our bilateral relations accordingly.
Mr. Wickramasinghe and I discussed how to enhance the economic partnership between India and Sri Lanka. We also discussed with President Wickremesinghe the problem of our fishermen who are working hard to increase connectivity and strengthen cooperation in the fields of tourism, energy, trade, education, financial technology and skill development. We both agreed that this issue should be approached in a humane and compassionate manner.
I am sure that Sri Lanka will continue to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamil community. This year we are marking the 75th year of India-Sri Lanka friendship and 200 years since the Tamil community of Indian origin came to Sri Lanka. Various projects worth 75 crore rupees were announced for Tamil people of Indian origin in Sri Lanka. India will further contribute to development programs in the northern and eastern regions of Sri Lanka. Passenger ferry services will be started between Nagapattinam and Kankasanthurai to boost commerce and people-to-people ties between the two countries.” Prime Minister Modi said here.
