A man who robbed a gold necklace from the neck of a woman who was walking with her daughter in Mathugama town was chased by a group of school students for a kilometer and then surrounded and handed over to the police.
The 47-year-old woman, who sell sarees as a profession by going to various shops, was travelling with her 16-year-old daughter when her gold necklace was robbed yesterday (27) evening. Police say that at that time, a group of students who were going home after finishing school noticed the woman’s screams and chased after the fleeing robber.
Unable to escape from the students, the robber, who had run for a distance of about 1 km, ran into a thicket of forest and the police came to the spot and arrested the suspect who was hiding along with the necklace.
On checking the identity of the robber, it has been revealed that he is a resident of Mathugama who is working in the Kataragama military camp.
