Steps have been taken to prepare an environmental and climate plan for the city of Colombo.
By implementing such a plan, Colombo can be developed again as the “Garden City of Asia”, Colombo Regional Development Committee Chairman Yadamini Gunawardena has pointed out.
According to statistical reports, Colombo city has a population of around 350,000 people, around 600,000 people at night and 1,250,000 during the day.
However, in addition to the people residing in Colombo, there are many Sri Lankan people who live locally and abroad coming for various jobs, services, business, economic, education and tourism activities to Colombo city, according to the Colombo Regional Development Committee information.
It is also said that the population density increases to 1,800,000 during the day and 750,000 during the night.
The aim of this plan is to create a civil society with higher mental satisfaction through the creation of environmental conditions, clean air, and water that are helpful for the basic survival of all, young and old.
Accordingly, this will be the basic plan that aligns the popular city of Colombo with the global Sustainable Development Goals.
At the request of the Chairman of Colombo Regional Development Committee, Member of Parliament Mr. Yadamini Gunawardena, these matters were discussed last week at the Ministry of Environment, Battaramulla under the chairmanship of Mr. Naseer Ahmed, Minister of Environment.
