The government has taken steps to repeal the Bread Ordinance, which contained rules regarding the sale of bread.
The Bread Ordinance No. 13 of 1864 was enacted to regulate the sale of bread and to prevent the mixing of spoiled flour with bread offered for sale.
It has been recognized that there is no further need to implement the ordinance.
The government says that in implementing the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003, there are times when problems arise with certain provisions of that ordinance.
Accordingly, the Council of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Safety to instruct a draftsman to prepare draft constitutions to repeal the said ordinance.
Why change an ordinance or act that is relevant and has protected customers all these years. ?
Why go so much as to process and change already existing act , that has protected the public. Strong and stringent action of the CPA , authority officers should act towards the over charging bakeries forthwith.
No proper supervision of the bakeries in urban and suburbans are effected by the CPASL, bread goes at 150/- buns at 30 /- etc.
How come the brand named bread? In so called supermarkets sold at exorbitant prices. With same of their other bakery items ? Useless changing ordinances. Weakness of the CPASL authorities.
