Calculation of the damage caused by the X-Press Pearl restarts

According to the Maritime Environmental Protection Authority, steps have been taken to recalculate the damage caused by the X-Press Pearl ship that caught fire in Sri Lankan waters in 2021.

Its chairman, Mr. Asela Rakeva, lawyer, stated that the preparation of the report has started as per the instructions of the Attorney General’s Department.

The chairman mentioned that the calculation of the damage caused to Sri Lanka by the X-Press Pearl ship between April 30th of this year has been started.

The damage caused to the Sri Lankan waters by the fire of the X-Press Pearl ship has been calculated so far only up to November 30 of last year.

The Marine Environment Protection Authority said the new calculations could further increase the total damages currently estimated at nearly $6.5 billion.
