Three armed underworld members broke into the Minuwangoda house where a warden of Magazine Prison who was strictly enforcing the law by finding ways to bring drugs into the prison, early yesterday morning, attacked him and threatened him with death.
The warden named MTSK Marasinghe, who was injured in the attacks, is currently receiving treatment in the Minuwangoda hospital.
Warden Marasinghe, who is unmarried, is 28 years old. Lives at home with mother and sister. It is said that when the mother and sister fell at the feet of the armed men and requested them not to harm Marasinghe, they were also kicked by the armed men.
At around 4.30 am, these three armed men broke into the house in the rain, wearing hoods and coats to cover their faces.
The police have also received information that the armed group came on motorcycles. The police say that they knocked on the door saying “Mr. Marasingha” and that the door was opened by his mother.
The police say that when the mother opened the door of the house, the armed group broke into the house and came out of the room with Marasingha, who was sleeping in the room. The police say that those armed persons first hit Warden Marasinghe on the head with a pistol and placed the pistol on his head, and made him kneel down. It is said that the three armed men who broke into the house at that time stacked the warden with their hands and legs and hit him several times on the head with the handle of the pistol.
The group also tried to tie the hands of Warden Marasinghe with cable ties, but he did not allow it and struggled. It is said that this group attacked him then as well.
The immediate cause of this assault is considered to be the seizure by Warden Marasinghe of a consignment of drugs that a Maradana drug dealer had brought to the prison to hold a party for his birthday about a month ago. During further investigations, it has been revealed that the drug was brought into the prison by a high-ranking officer than him. It is said that an internal investigation is currently being conducted by the prison.
An attack on this officer happens when the Maradana drug dealer is released on bail. Police information also stated that this officer had told the Minuwangoda Police when he made his complaint that there is a strong suspicion in this regard.
