The Ministry of Trade states that there is sufficient stock of essential food items required for the Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations in the country.
Mr. MB Athapatthu, Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, told Newswave that the affairs of stock reserves with importers are being conducted under constant supervision.
He also mentioned that raiding units of the Consumer Authority and Weights and Measures Department have been deployed for raids across the island to reduce consumer distress including concealment of stock and charging of high prices.
He also revealed that all the banks have been informed to release the money required for the import of essential commodities including food to the country.
