The special commodity tax imposed on imported dates has been reduced.
Accordingly, the tax amount which was imposed as Rs. 200 for 01 kg of dates, has been reduced to one rupee.
The President as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policy has given these instructions as a relief measure for the upcoming Ramadan festival.
This tax exemption applies only to dates received in Sri Lanka as gifts or donations from various countries, organizations, business institutions, voluntary organizations and well-wishers on the recommendations of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, where no foreign exchange is spent.
This order has been issued with effect from today (08) in accordance with Gazette Notification No. 2308/17.
