The government has decided only to provide electricity bills and payment slips online from next January.
The Minister of Power and Energy Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera says that this decision was taken yesterday during a decision-making discussion for cost management and reduction of the Ceylon Electricity Board.
Also, decisions have been taken to regulate the installation and operation of street lights, to have certain services currently performed by the private sector to be done by the employees of the Electricity Board, and the services that are not possible to do so are provided by the local authorities at a lower cost, and to manage and reduce costs including payment programs.
It has been informed that the work on the new building of the Electricity Board, which started in 2021, will be temporarily stopped.
This discussion was held yesterday evening at the Ministry of Electricity with the Additional General Managers and Deputy General Managers of the Electricity Distribution Division of the Electricity Board to discuss the existing problems and reduce the Electricity Board’s costs to maintain the services efficiently.
Deputy General Managers from all over the island joined the event through the online system.
