A police team had fled after looting cash and gold from a group coming from India

The Peliyagoda Police has started an investigation to arrest a police team of the Peliyagoda Division Criminal Investigation Department who kidnapped three people including a woman who was coming to India with clothes and stole more than Rs. 10 million in cash and gold items from them.

This robbery took place in the section between Katunayake International Airport and Peliyagoda Wanawasala road in the morning of last 10th.

3800 US dollars, 09 bottles of whiskey and 56.25 pounds worth of gold items have been looted. The total value of the looted property has been calculated at Rs. 10,235,400.

The police say that the robbing team consist of sub-inspector, a sergeant and two constables
and they went in a private van to carry out the robbery.

Police investigations have revealed that while the three people including the woman from India were traveling from the airport, they crossed the path of the van they were traveling in and the police officers took them into the van and took the property including the gold and money they had found, saying that they had brought gold from India. Then these robber police officers took them to the Peliyagoda police station in the morning and then released after looting their of gold and properties.

Police information stated that the victims have complained to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Western Northern District Mr. Rohan Premaratne and accordingly an investigation has been started.

With that investigation, the four police officers have fled and steps have been taken to suspend them. A senior police officer said that it is now being revealed that this police team has been engaged in such crimes for a long time.
