    Ex-Chairman returns to COPE Committee

Its former chairman Prof. Charitha Herath has been nominated to the Committee on Public Enterprises or COPE Committee.

Deputy Speaker Parliamentarian Ajith Rajapakse while addressing the Parliament today (18) announced that Professor Charita Herath will be appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Opposition Member of Parliament Dr. Harsha de Silva.

Professor Charitha Herath was previously the chairman of COPE, but this time he was nominated to the Committee on Public Accounts or COPA Committee.

Opposition members blamed former chairman Professor Charitha Herath for dropping his name while announcing a new 27-member COPE committee recently.

Also, on October 4th, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa informed the House that his party’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Harsha de Silva, has taken a voluntary decision to withdraw from the COPE Committee.

Announcing that Dr. Harsha de Silva will leave the COPE Committee due to the fact that he is the Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts and the workload related to that committee.

However, the opposition leader had asked to include Professor Charita Herath in the COPE committee in the vacancy of Mr. Harsha De Silva.

Professor Ranjith Bandara, Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, has been appointed as the Chairman of the COPE Committee or Committee on Public Enterprises this year.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Member of Parliament Professor Charita Herath has left the ruling party and is currently working with an independent opposition group.
