The Nawalapitiya Police have arrested 15 people including SJB Nawalapitiya Political Organizer Sasanka Sampath, who were preparing to march on the road during the public meeting being held in Nawalapitiya town under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office stated that there is a municipal councillor and a local council member among them.
The SJB office is located at a distance of about 200 meters from the venue of the rally organized by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. The police say that more than 100 people had gathered at that place to march in a rally and that they were ready to march along the Nawalapitiya Kothmale road. The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office also states that the police informed the organizers not to proceed with the march considering the conflict situation that may arise from the movement of the march from a place where an opposing political meeting is held. The police stated that the organizer and the group were arrested for disobeying the instructions given by the police and for illegally preparing to hold the demonstration by blocking the road.
