A group of around 1,000 residents of the two villages have quarreled themselves with sticks at the kovil site yesterday due to a dispute between two villages regarding the priority of holding the annual festival of the Sri Bhadrakali Amman kovil at Senakudiirippu in Kalmunai.
The police say that the army and the police special task force had to be called in to control the conflict.
More than 50 people were injured in this clash. Among them, 09 people including a woman were injured and admitted to Kalmunai Hospital. Those with minor injuries are not hospitalized.
The annual festival of Sri Bhadrakali Amman kovil at Senakudiirippu in Kalmunai has started on 26th. The event is scheduled to be held until October 5.
The police say that every year this festival is organized by the administrative staff of the temple located in Padanchi in Nappatimuna area. The police say that the people of Senakudiirippu have been continuously quarreling with the temple administration for not giving them the leadership of some events of this festival.
The police say that they are investigating the persons involved in this conflict.
