The government is focusing on starting an electric bus service in Colombo city.
Also, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, the Minister of Transport and Highways, said that the necessary activities to register electric three-wheelers will be started in the future.
It is expected to convert 300 three-wheelers to electric power and prepare a system for that within this year under the E-Mobility program implemented as a pilot project of the UNDP. One million US dollars has been allocated by UNDP for that purpose.
More than 1 million three-wheelers are currently operating in Sri Lanka.
By converting the three-wheelers to run on electric power, there is a solution to the fuel problem and passengers can travel at a convenient price.
Speaking here, the minister said that a cabinet paper has been submitted to the National Transport Commission to take responsibility for all the institutions related to passenger transport.
He said that it will allow the National Transport Commission to amend the Act, determine the fees and impose fines.
These facts were revealed when a preliminary discussion was held today (22) to add electric three-wheelers and buses to the operation of Sri Lanka as soon as possible in order to reduce the petroleum crisis and environmental effects.
It was held with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Bandula Gunawardena and representatives of UNDP.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Highways, the Chairman of the National Transport Commission and a group of officials and representatives of the UNDP joined this event.
