The Ministry of Agriculture said that it was recommended to use 70% chemical fertilizers and 30% organic fertilizers for paddy cultivation in the upcoming season.
The Ministry announced that this decision was taken during a discussion held today (27) with the participation of agricultural experts under the chairmanship of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera.
The meeting was called to determine the rates of fertilizer to be used in paddy cultivation with the aim of obtaining a successful harvest in the coming season under the integrated plant nutrition management program based on scientific data.
Scholars have pointed out that such a formal step should be followed in order to get a successful paddy harvest.
It was decided there that the government should intervene in the provision of chemical fertilizers and give farmers the opportunity to choose according to their wishes in the case of organic fertilizers.
The Minister of Agriculture stated that if the farmers use organic fertilizers, steps will also be taken to provide a subsidy for that.
It was also decided to present the relevant decision to the Cabinet for approval.
