Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, who was elected as the successor president, says that according to the constitution, a prime minister is a person who has the majority support of the parliament and since he is the only one in his party, he cannot choose it.
He said this in response to a journalist’s question, ‘Who will be the next Prime Minister?’
The new President, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe who was elected by the Parliament, also gave his comments about the struggle as follows.
“My hope is to cooperate with the various parties in the parliament in this country. The people of the country are asking us why we cannot work together and develop the country. Are we engaging in oppositional politics to destroy the country? Young people are asking this question. It is an important question, I have also thought about it. So we need to change this system and listen to those young people’s opinions.
The struggle meant, in fact, a struggle against the current system to change it in all aspects. Therefore, we should allow those who have peaceful ideas to spread those ideas, and we can also answer them. We should also accept the views of those who remain silent. But it is not democracy to topple a government, burn houses, and take the office of the president and the prime minister under the guise of this. It is against the law. We will act against those who oppose that law. If the youth want to build a future through struggle, I fully support it. Today peaceful people have been suppressed. I will create another platform for peaceful people to express their views.”
