A girl was died and five others were injured when a car carrying a group of people who were coming from a wedding collided with a train on the unprotected railway crossing near Galle/Anuladevi Girls’ College in Megalle this morning.
The injured include four elderly people including a pregnant mother and a small child, police said.
Eyewitnesses of the accident said that this car entered the railway crossing while the warning signals are in operation.
A young man who was there at the time of the accident said that when the car was about to enter the railway crossing while the warning signals were in operation, he shouted “Don’t Go” but the car entered the railway crossing without paying any attention to it and entered the railway track.
The young man mentioned that the car was stopped in the middle of the railway crossing and the car hit by the train was pulled forward about 10 to 15 meters.
The front part of the car was severely damaged in the accident.
