The army fired shots into the air to control the situation when people queuing for fuel at Meegahatenna filling station assaulted a Army corporal and attempting to hijack a firearm behaving riotously.
This incident has taken place tonight due to non-supply of fuel to the barrels.
With police arresting th man who assaulted the corporal and tried to snatch his firearm, more than 500 people had gathered near the petrol station and rioted, attempting to set fire to the petrol station, police said. A senior police official said that they were able to control the situation by dispersing the group by firing into the air with minimal force.
