Thirteen persons have been arrested in connection with the May 09 riots in and around Chilaw, police said.
The houses of several politicians in Chilaw, Madampe, Arachchikattuwa, Nattandiya, Dankotuwa and Wennappuwa were attacked and set on fire on the 9th. Police say that the persons arrested are those involved in the incidents.
Accordingly, the Arachchikattuwa Police have arrested 03 persons, the Chilaw Police – 1 person and the Koswatta Police – 1 person.
Meanwhile, Wennappuwa Police have arrested arrested 01 person, Dankotuwa Police – 04 persons and Madampe Police – 03 persons.
The arrested suspects are to be produced before the Chilaw and Marawila Magistrate Courts.
Chilaw SSP Lalith Rohana Gamage said that several special police teams have been appointed to arrest those involved in the May 09 incidents.
Accordingly, two teams led by the OIC of each Police Station and the OIC of the Criminal Investigation Division, as well as the Divisional Special Crime Investigation Division and the Divisional Intelligence Division have been deployed for investigations, the SSP said.
