The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has strongly denied reports in the media and on social media that India is sending troops to Sri Lanka.
The Office has stated that these reports and such comments are not in line with the position of the Government of India.
A spokesman for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said yesterday that India fully supports Sri Lanka’s commitment to democracy, stability and economic recovery.
Subramaniam Swamy, a senior politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, made the comment on his social media account which was quickly discussed prompting criticism.
He said that Indian troops should be sent to establish about constitutional security and that it is a threat to India as foreigners were trying to take advantage of the hostile situation that had arisen among the people.
He did not mention Sri Lanka directly in the post, but another said quoting the post that the situation in Sri Lanka was a threat to India.
However, Mr. Swamy’s post was reported to have been linked to Sri Lanka by the Indian media as well.
