The Minister of Agriculture Janaka Wakkumbura stated in Parliament today that steps will be taken to provide a subsidy to farmers for all types of fertilizers.
India has agreed to supply 65,000 metric tons of urea and steps will be taken to provide the farmer with 25 kilos of fertilizer per acre free of charge, the Minister said.
The Minister also said that steps will be taken to pay the compensation due to the farmers from next Monday.
Minister Janaka Wakkumbura stated that a price formula will be introduced for fertilizer and that both fertilizer companies have already started importing fertilizer.
Farmers will be provided with solid organic fertilizer as well as liquid fertilizer during the Yala season, the Minister said. The Minister also said that urea will be provided to farmers per the reduced amount of nitrogen by applying organic manure, as recommended by the Director of Agriculture.
